American Airlines: A Digital Makeover at JFK

When American Airlines’ new Terminal 9 opened at New York’s JFK airport, travelers were awed by the massive mural adorning the 65 foot high wall. The mural, created by Italian artist and architect Matteo Pericoli and called “Skyline of the World”, spans nearly 400 feet and is over 50 feet high.

“Skyline of the World” places landmark buildings from around the world into a single skyline. The resulting masterpiece depicts four hundred and fifteen unique buildings from seventy cities of the world. In Pericoli’s mural you will see the American Airlines JFK Terminal (of course) next to the Einstein Tower in Potsdam, Germany next to the Tate Modern in London.

The feedback was great. Passengers loved the mural and requested an index to its buildings. American Airlines decided to create a digital directory that would complement Pericoli’s work visually, and provide an engaging experience for their customers.

YCD Multimedia was commissioned by American Airlines’ vendor , Full Circle Media, to provide the full solution, from the conception and design of the digital content to the technology platform from which the content is served. The resulting solution click here to view is an eye-catching series of five 46” screens which showcase an animated representation of Pericoli’s mural powered by YCD’s MuVi Wall platform. During the two and a half minute video loop a visitor to the terminal can watch the digital mural, while viewing the full size mural overhead, and be entertained and informed while a selection of the buildings from the mural are highlighted and identified.
